Bee queen jelly - the "miracle food" for bee queens
The protein-rich secretion, the "bee queen gel", is produced by working bees that care for car larvae. The secretion is primarily the food for car larvae and all larvae receive bee queen jelly during the first 2-3 days.
Thereafter, only the larvae that will become queens receive bite queen jelly. All other larvae are fed with a mixture of nectar and pollen. The queens thus come from the same type of eggs as the bees.
The bee queen will be about 40% larger than the bees due to its special feed. She lives 10-50 times longer and produces up to 3,000 eggs daily. The eggs correspond to 2.5 times her body weight! This unique ability of the bee queen is explained by a change in the endocrine system as a result of her being fed as a larva with a lot of bee queen jelly.
